I went ahead and bought an iPhone 16GB SIM-free in Apple's Shop - for a Christmas present for my Daughter. Then afterwards went back to Orange Shop and bought a 30 day rolling contract SIM only plan having 600 minutes, unlimited texts, and 500MB Internet data. The price is about the same over two years, plus if other contract deals improve, she is not stuck to a lousy deal. Being tied to a 24 month contract was the main reason. In two years a lot can happen.
Orange Shop were very helpful, the 30 day plan was enabled having restrictions to prevent premium rate numbers being dialled - not part of the plan.
A new iPhone 4 SIM free sold in Apple Stores comes with a 12 month warranty. Extended warranty was available. However I decided to purchase 2 years insurance cover separately that cost an extra £115, to protect against most risks faced by children - loss, damage theft etc.
