Apple iPad™ 2

iPad 2 is the most recent tech offering by Apple. Scheduled for released on 25/3/2011 in the UK, this is being hailed as the logical up-gradation of the earlier Apple iPad 1, that has gained much popularity among the masses for being easy-to-use and visually attractive.

The new model appears much slimmer, now only 88mm and lighter and notably faster. There are twin cameras allowing video conferencing and taking snapshots and the prices remain more or less unchanged, depending on the configurations. Although there are other tablets equipped with almost identical features in the market currently like the Motorola Zoom, there is none comparable to the iPad in terms of simplicity and elegance.

What's New?

  • The touchscreen tablet appearance is almost the same, iPad 2 has less weight and a sleeker body having a curved back. This makes it more manageable and the altered shape allows the users to hold it in their hands for long periods without feeling discomfort.
  • Two cameras have been introduced in the new iPad 2, one at the front and a back camera allowing users to easily video-chat. Both cameras are capable of working with FaceTime application and the back can shoot HD videos.
  • Also the HDMI AV adapter lets you dual output video to a HTDV in 1080p.

iPad 2

  • A dual core chip in the new Apple iPad 2 allows faster opening of applications as compared to the older model.
  • Interoperability of the new Apple's operating software helps improve web browsing speed – videos can therefore be uploaded faster and run without buffering. You can share music from iTunes library on different Apple devices having the same Wi-Fi network.
  • The device has ten hours battery life like the first model and you can purchase versions which work with either Vodafones cellular network or Orange. Now you can even choose between black or white colors unlike earlier when it was available only in black.
  • The smart cover with a magnetic latch (blue/pink/white/yellow) is an additional accessory, which doubles as a triangluar iPad stand.
  • The gyroscope functions will improve its appeal for video games usage.

The most important difference when comparing iPads is the 3G and non 3G versions. 3G is a type of Wi-Fi, both support Wi-Fi. Without a 3G iPad you cannot go mobile. Instead you must use a local Wireless access point. A 3G iPad 2 can pick up a mobile signal from cellular network. The 3G service is sold separately, (see data plans: 3, Orange, Vodafone, O2) ? this then allows Internet use away from a local broadband connection, as well of course being able to connect to broadband Wi-Fi in the home and office using a wireless compatible access point. Once bought it cannot be converted to 3g iPad.

All said and done, the new Apple iPad 2 hardware is essentially an evolutionary gadget, not a revolutionary one. Notable its better in terms of speed, it is undoubtedly the fastest iOS to have been invented. The storage capacity has not been increased to 128GB. The biggest disappoint with 2, is not the lack of a retina screen, it is again the same as 1, the lack of standard I/O ports (SD card reader, USB) not being built-in Apple iPads; for reasons unknown. Does what is says on the tin and by far the best Tablet computer to buy.

I ordered online Friday and had my iPad2 delivered on Monday, better than advertised (within 2-3 working days). It's been very entertaining downloading cool apps priced from just 69p each you can't go wrong.
